Breast Implant removal

  • What are the risks and complications of breast implant removal

There are various risks of any surgery including removal of breast implants.

These include bleeding, infection, and nerve damage.

Uncommonly, some patients may develop injury to the lung cavity which can be life threatening.  This may present as severe shortness of breath and a painful chest after surgery.  If so, immediate interventions are necessary.

It is imperative to understand more at your consultation with Dr Nara.

  • Why would some patients decide to have implants removed?

There's a myriad of reasons as to why a patient may decide to remove their implants.  Some may experience issues related directly locally to the site of the breast.  Others feel that the symptoms in their body, outside the breast region, may be related to the breast implants.  The US Food and drug administration have analysed many research studies relating to breast implant illness where the silicone was not found to have a strong association with "breast implant illness."  However, some studies have shown that it is related to silicone.  For further information regarding this, book a consult with Dr. Nara for a detailed assessment.  At times, you may need many other specialists involved such as an endocrinologist, immunologist, gynaecologist, breast surgeon and your respective general practitioner.

  • How is it done?

It is first important to seek professional consultation with regards to this so that you can make an informed decision whether surgery to remove the implants is suitable for you.  There are various different techniques which will be discussed with you during the consult.  Dr. Nara performs these operations under general anaesthetic at the discussed licensed operation theatres for your comfort.

  • Is the operation straightforward?

Dr Nara will consult his patients requiring breast implant removal thoroughly beforehand. There are various ways and techniques of doing so.  This will need to be discussed with you as you too are directly involved in the decision-making process of surgery! It is your body!  Whilst it is easy to say that breast implant removal is straightforward, there are various complexities to it and safe techniques which need to be discussed at your consult.

  • Is this a means to an end?

Absolutely not.  Some patients may decide that they do not want implants for now.  This could be due to any reason from having symptoms to no symptoms at all.  Some may in fact say they may have had breast implant illness.  Later in life, it does not preclude them from having any other form of cosmetic breast surgery such as with breast implants or a breast lift.

  • Is it painful?

It depends on your initial surgery on how it was done and what the current condition of your soft tissues are like.  Dr Nara will advise and assess you thoroughly at your consult so that you can make an informed decision.  Generally, because Dr Nara uses very focused techniques in surgery to ensure your comfort, most of his patients are in fact comfortable after surgery.  For more information, simply get in touch with us by clicking the call button.

  • Where is the incision for breast implants removal?

Generally, Dr Nara uses your previous incisions of surgery.  At times, you may also need incisions under the breast mound.  This is commonly in Australia.

  • Do I really need my breast implants out?

Dr Nara takes pride in the provision of a thorough consultation to understand your concerns from your perspective.  If it is really unnecessary then this will be an option of your cosmetic planning and don't worry you will not be commited to surgery.

  • What will happen to my breast tissues after breast implants removal?

Breast tissues will usually recede and sag when the breast implants are removed.  The other issue is the excess skin will become more prominent after surgery which will be different to when you had the breast implants in.  Dr Nara understands this may be complex to understand so book your appointment for more details.

  • Will i have scarring?

Yes, any surgery whether cosmetic or not has some degree of scarring.  You must understand your surgeon and be comfortable with the consultation process prior to any cosmetic surgery.  Ask the surgeon whether they had formal training in cosmetic surgery.

  • How about after surgery?

Dr Nara enjoys seeing his patients after surgery.  He will look for any concerns should you have any and follow up thoroughly.  Any cosmetic surgery including the removal of breast implants is very important, especially the aftercare process.

  • Does this mean no more breast scans?

It is important for all women to have their routine breast scans as advised whether they have implants in their body or not.  Please speak to your respective general practitioner about this as it is important for your general wellbeing.
