The fundamentals before any treatment
Understanding gynaecomastia is important because there are specific medical conditions that need to be excluded before any cosmetic treatment is considered. Some patients may have Poland syndrome or Klinefelter syndrome. A thorough assessment is required, in line with the guidelines set in place by the Medical Board of Australia, to keep you safe.
Patients need to be carefully assessed in order to ensure their safety, and especially listened to — they may have specific goals with regards to the appearance of their chest. All patients are unique, with different requests. The right starting point is a conversation, not a quote.
The treatments Dr Nara may discuss
Some cosmetic treatments for gynaecomastia offered by Dr Nara, in addition to a thorough cosmetic and psychological assessment, involve liposuction and fat graft to the chest region to alter the contour. These treatments are not without risks. The full risks are on our risks of surgery page and are worked through line by line at consultation.
For the broader picture of gynaecomastia options — including subcutaneous mastectomy, glandular tissue removal, periareolar approaches and the procedure-specific FAQs — see our gynaecomastia (male chest) surgery page.
If this is your first enquiry
It can be a difficult experience attending a consultation, or even simply making an enquiry, about gynaecomastia. We understand and appreciate the anxiousness that can surround this. That is why we are here to listen to your concerns. Speak to your general practitioner. Speak to us. Get clarity, in your own time.
After all, years of contemplation regarding gynaecomastia warrants attention and careful assessment. If you are interested in a comprehensive and thorough assessment, the next step is a consultation — and we will complement that with the guidelines of the Medical Board of Australia, including a written cooling-off period, to keep you safe.
Tasmania consults
Dr Nara consults with Tasmania-based patients at the Cooee rooms, with alternate consult dates approximately every two months at Hobart. Patients travel from Devonport, Launceston, Burnie and across the state. If travel to a consultation is a consideration, a Zoom assessment can be the first appointment, with the in-person follow-up arranged around your schedule. A formal cooling-off period applies between consultation and any procedure, in line with Medical Board of Australia guidelines for cosmetic surgery.
The questions patients bring
Years of contemplation about changing the shape of the chest
Gynaecomastia — colloquially known as "male breasts" — is not just the appearance of prominent breast tissue on the male chest. It generally carries important psychological components, and some men spend years contemplating the intricacies of it. Some of the questions patients have asked us, in their own words.
- Why do I have this?
- If I lose weight will it improve?
- Am I too young to look into this?
- I am considering altering the shape, contour or appearance of my chest…
- Why do I have "male breasts"?
- How can I look into changing the appearance of my chest?
- Are there any options into changing the appearance of my chest?
- Is it safe to look into surgical options for my breast tissue or chest?
- Are there surgical options for "man breasts"?
- Are there non-surgical options for gynaecomastia?
- Will it be obvious?
- Will people know that I had surgery?
- I don't want anyone to know…
- Is the recovery short?
- Can I get back to the gym after surgery?
Patients are carefully assessed for their safety, and listened to closely — many have specific goals regarding the appearance of their chest, and these goals vary from person to person. No patient is the same.
"Being part of the patient's cosmetic journey together with our team at RevAesthetic is a privilege and honour."

Reserve your consult
Gynaecomastia decisions are made in person, after a thorough assessment with a chaperone present. A formal quote is only provided after that consultation, because anatomy, the proportion of fat to glandular tissue, and the operative plan differ between patients. Dr Nara is a cosmetic doctor — private health insurance and Medicare rebates do not apply.
Submitting this form sends your enquiry to Dr Nara's team. Please don't include sensitive medical details — those are discussed at consultation.
