About the procedure

A confidential and respectful conversation

Hymenoplasty, also known as hymen repair, is an important and personal procedure offered at RevAesthetic for patients seeking reconstruction of the hymenal membrane. The procedure is usually performed under local (tumescent) anaesthetic with light oral sedation in a fully accredited hospital setting; a general anaesthetic is an option where an anaesthetist is involved. Surgical and patient care standards are held to the same level as any of our other operations.

The hymen is a thin layer of mucosal tissue located just inside the vaginal opening. While traditionally associated with virginity in some cultural or religious contexts, the hymen can be naturally absent or disrupted due to a wide variety of reasons — including physical activity (such as gymnastics or horse riding), tampon use, medical examination, injury, or consensual or non-consensual sexual experience. The hymen may be widened, partially or completely separated, or have different layers.

At RevAesthetic, we acknowledge that patients may choose hymenoplasty for deeply personal, cultural, religious or emotional reasons. Our approach is to support each patient with understanding, respect and complete confidentiality. Every consultation is conducted in a non-judgemental environment where your concerns, motivations and expectations can be discussed openly with Dr Nara, with a written cooling-off period and structured aftercare in line with Medical Board of Australia guidelines.

Why patients choose us

Five things that guide our approach

For a procedure this personal, you should be able to look at any practice and ask "why this team, and not another?" These are five honest answers from us.

  1. 01

A career built around cosmetic medicine and surgery

Dr Nara brings his medical and surgical training to every consultation — including specific experience with intimate cosmetic procedures.

  2. 02

    Fully qualified Surgical Fellow, ACCSM

Dr Nara is a Surgical Fellow of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine — a fellowship undertaken specifically to be skilled in cosmetic surgery and medicine.

  3. 03

Procedures performed in accredited hospital facilities

All procedures are performed in licensed hospital facilities under anaesthesia. Hymen repair is usually performed under local (tumescent) anaesthetic with light oral sedation; a general anaesthetic is an option where an anaesthetist is involved. The options are discussed thoroughly at consultation.

  4. 04

    Confidential, compassionate, culturally respectful care

We maintain patient discretion and respect cultural, religious and personal diversity. Care is guided by principles of patient dignity, surgical safety and outcomes that align with your individual goals.

  5. 05

    Research-informed and continuously updated

We continuously update our procedural techniques and care based on research, clinical science and extensive experience with patients who seek hymen reconstruction.

What recovery looks like

In honest terms

No recovery from any operation is "easy" — there are always questions and the possibility of side effects. The aftercare is the bigger part of recovering well. These are the points patients tell us they wish they had known upfront.

  1. 01

    2 to 3 days · light activity

Most patients return to light activities within two to three days following surgery. These are individual ranges, not promises.

  2. 02

Mild discomfort and spotting are expected

Mild discomfort, spotting or swelling are part of the expected recovery. Standard analgesia and supportive measures are used; discomfort is generally in the lower part of the scale and managed with simple pain relief.

  3. 03

6 weeks · no strenuous activity or intercourse

Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and sexual intercourse should be avoided for at least six weeks. Return to work depends on the type of work — most patients return to non-physical work in about one week.

  4. 04

    A follow-up is always arranged

A structured follow-up appointment is arranged to monitor healing and address any post-operative concerns. You have direct access to the team for ongoing support during your recovery. For a broader read on intimate-procedure recovery, see our recovery strategies article.

Support to bring with you

Am I ready for this?

We value your time and understand the different goals, expectations and challenges each patient brings. We appreciate that each patient is different — and that the conversation around hymen repair can carry weight that is not always easy to navigate alone.

It is important to gain all the support you can have. That may include a trusted friend or family member; an interpreter, if English is not your first language; a specialist general practitioner; or a specialist psychiatrist or psychologist. Any of these can help you make an informed decision where possible.

Our staff are happy to consult with you to explain the procedure, and in your own time you can decide what is best for you. You are encouraged to bring a chaperone of your choice to the consultation — and a chaperone will also be present in the room with Dr Nara at all times.

Patient questions

Confidential conversations that come up at consultation

These are questions Dr Nara is most often asked about hymenoplasty. They are not a substitute for an individual assessment — they are a starting point for one. All consultations are confidential.

  • 01 Who is hymenoplasty for?
Hymen repair is a personal decision, and there is no medical necessity for the procedure in most cases. For patients who feel this procedure may provide reassurance, peace of mind, or fulfil important cultural or personal expectations, hymenoplasty may be a suitable option. Dr Nara conducts a confidential consultation to assess your individual circumstances, discuss the surgical plan, and ensure the decision is informed and appropriate for you.
  • 02 How is the procedure performed?
Hymenoplasty is generally a day procedure. The technique involves excision of torn hymenal remnants — if present — to create clean, healthy tissue margins; reapproximation of the hymenal edges using delicate, dissolvable sutures to recreate the appearance of an intact hymen; and where necessary, reconstruction using adjacent vaginal mucosa to support the repair and provide an anatomical appearance. Internal sutures placed are designed to dissolve during the healing period. The goal is reconstruction of the hymenal tissue with an aim toward aesthetic balance and a symmetrical entrance.
  • 03 How long is hymen repair surgery?
The duration depends on the degree of separation, the complexity of the soft tissues, and the goals and expectations for each individual patient. Most procedures are completed within 35 to 90 minutes, though more involved repairs can take up to two hours. A timeframe specific to your case is discussed at consultation.
  • 04 Is it a day procedure?
Yes. All hymenoplasty procedures at RevAesthetic are day procedures. You go home the same day with written aftercare instructions and direct access to the team.
  • 05 What is the recovery like?
Most patients return to light activities within 2 to 3 days. Mild discomfort, spotting or swelling is expected and managed with simple analgesia. Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and sexual intercourse should be avoided for at least 6 weeks. A follow-up appointment is arranged to monitor healing and address any post-operative concerns. Comprehensive post-operative instructions are provided, and you have direct access to the team for ongoing support during your recovery.
  • 06 When can I get back to work?
Most patients are able to return to non-physical work in about one week. This depends on the type of reconstruction performed and the nature of your work — physical or active jobs need longer. Your return-to-work plan is discussed individually at consultation.
  • 07 When can I get back to the gym?
This really depends on the surgery, the type of gym activity, the work you do and the support you have at home. Light walking can usually resume within days. Higher-impact activity — running, weights, classes — generally needs to wait until around six weeks. This is assessed at your follow-up consultation, not promised in advance.
  • 08 Is the recovery easy?
Any recovery from a surgical procedure is taken seriously. When you have surgery, you are having an invasive procedure — the aftercare matters significantly and is one of the bigger factors in recovering well. No recovery is truly "easy": there are always questions, possible side effects, and individual variation. At RevAesthetic we have a specific regimen for the recovery phase of hymenoplasty patients, and you can read more about intimate-procedure recovery in our recovery strategies article.
  • 09 What level of discomfort should I expect?
All patients have varying levels of discomfort following surgery. This is generally manageable with standard pain relief and supportive care, and is usually in the lower part of the discomfort scale. Each patient responds differently and the realistic range of discomfort is part of the consent conversation.
  • 10 Will surgery make it bleed again?
This depends on what type of hymenoplasty is performed. There are reports in the literature that bleeding may occur, and equally, a person who has a native hymen may not necessarily bleed. Bleeding is not a reliable indicator of any particular outcome. To discuss this in your own context, book a confidential consultation.
  • 11 Can I or anyone tell if this has been repaired?
This again depends on how the hymen reconstruction has been performed. Visible scars on the inner thighs would be a sign of a non-discreet technique. Dr Nara uses techniques informed by current literature, clinical experience and discussion with colleagues, designed to minimise any visible signs of repair. Outcomes vary considerably between individuals based on anatomy, genetics, medical history, healing and personal factors.
  • 12 Will scarring be visible?
This depends on how the reconstruction has been performed. Visible scars on the inner thighs would be a sign of a non-discreet technique. Dr Nara uses techniques designed to minimise visible scarring, in line with current literature and clinical experience.
  • 13 What about confidentiality?
Confidentiality is one of our highest priorities for this procedure. Consultations are private, records are kept under strict confidentiality, and our team is briefed on the importance of discretion for hymen repair patients. Consultations can be booked at private sessions at our accredited clinics.
  • 14 Am I ready for this?
We value your time and understand that each patient comes with different goals, expectations and challenges. It is important to gain all the support you can: a trusted friend or family member, an interpreter if needed, your specialist general practitioner, or a specialist psychiatrist or psychologist. Any of these can help you make an informed decision. Our staff are happy to consult with you to explain the procedure, and in your own time you can choose what is best for you.
  • 15 What are the best options for me?
To understand this, it is important to be around people you trust to discuss it. The consultation helps you understand the procedural options available. To make an informed decision you must understand the process, technique and recovery thoroughly before committing to any surgical procedure. The right option for you in Melbourne, Tasmania or Adelaide is worked through individually with Dr Nara at consultation.
  • 16 Will I be confident in the team that will look after me?
Confidence in your decision comes from being fully informed about the procedure, understanding the options available, and being comfortable with the team managing your hymen reconstruction. At RevAesthetic we value cultural diversity, trust and respect. Patients have trusted us over the years to provide confidential intimate procedures.
  • 17 What are the risks of hymen repair?
All surgery carries inherent risks. These include bruising, swelling, bleeding, infection, asymmetry, sensation changes, wound healing problems, scarring (which is generally not visible), and the possibility that the repair does not heal as planned. The full list of risks is on our risks of surgery page and is worked through line by line at consultation. You should obtain a second opinion from a qualified health professional before any surgery.
  • 18 How much does hymen repair cost?
The cost of hymen repair varies across Australia, generally ranging from approximately AUD $2,000 to $10,000. This usually includes the doctor's fee, anaesthetic fee and operation theatre fees. Cost is one factor among many — others include whether the team is trusted and experienced, whether they respect cultural and religious diversity, whether they manage your discomfort well at consultation and at theatre, and whether they ensure confidentiality and trust throughout. Dr Nara is a cosmetic doctor — private health insurance and Medicare rebates do not apply. A formal quote is only provided after your individual consultation, by Cate, the practice manager.
  • 19 What happens at consultation?
A confidential face-to-face or Zoom assessment with Dr Nara, with a chaperone present. We discuss your individual circumstances, the surgical plan, the realistic range of outcomes and the full risks. You leave with written information — never a same-day decision. A specialist GP referral and a psychological assessment are part of the consultation per Medical Board of Australia guidelines.
  • 20 How long is the cooling-off period?
A formal cooling-off period applies between consultation and any procedure, in line with Medical Board of Australia guidelines for cosmetic surgery. The intent is the opposite of pressure — time to read the written consent paperwork, talk to your GP, ask follow-up questions, and decide whether to proceed.

Our process

From first conversation to follow-up

Every hymen repair patient moves through the same four steps, in the same order. Surgery only happens once steps one and two are done.

  1. 01

    Consultation

A face-to-face or Zoom assessment with Dr Nara, with a chaperone present. We discuss anatomy, medical history, technique options, the realistic range of outcomes, and the full risks. You leave with written information — never a same-day decision.

  2. 02

    Reflection

A formal cooling-off period under Medical Board of Australia guidelines. Time to reread the consent paperwork, talk to your GP, ask follow-up questions, and decide whether to proceed.

  3. 03

    Procedure

Performed by Dr Nara as a day procedure, usually under local (tumescent) anaesthetic with light oral sedation in a fully accredited hospital setting; a general anaesthetic is an option where an anaesthetist is involved. Technique is tailored to the individual anatomy, the degree of separation, and your specific goals. You go home with written aftercare and direct access to the team for ongoing support.

  4. 04

    Follow-up

Structured reviews through the first weeks and months. Most patients return to non-physical work around one week and to higher-impact activity around six weeks, depending on healing — these are individual ranges, not promises.
