01Article · Hymenoplasty
What the procedure —
actually involves.
Hymen repair, or hymenoplasty, is one of the most privacy-sensitive procedures we offer at RevAesthetic. This article walks through what the procedure actually involves — the surgical technique, the privacy safeguards we have in place, the regulatory framework around it, and what to expect at consultation. It is written for patients researching anonymously, with cultural sensitivity in mind.
02In short
Hymenoplasty is a day-surgery procedure that gently reapproximates residual hymenal tissue using fine dissolvable sutures, performed under anaesthesia. Recovery is generally one to two weeks for the immediate phase, with a six-week rest period before sexual activity or strenuous exercise. The decision belongs to the patient, alone, and we have explicit privacy safeguards in place for every step of the pathway.
03Who this article is for
Your reasons —
are your own.
Patients consider hymen repair for many reasons — personal, cultural, religious, or following a specific event. We do not ask patients to justify the decision, and we do not categorise the request. The decision belongs to you, and our role is to give you accurate clinical information so that you can make an informed decision in line with Medical Board of Australia guidelines.
For the broader clinical overview of the procedure itself, see our hymen repair pillar page and the earlier longer-form companion piece hymen repair in Australia — what the procedure actually involves.
04What happens during the procedure
Six steps —
over a single day.
The procedure is performed as a day surgery at our accredited Melbourne theatre. You arrive in the morning, the procedure itself typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, and you are discharged home the same day.
- 01Gentle examination under local (tumescent) anaesthetic with light oral sedation — a general anaesthetic is an option where an anaesthetist is involved — depending on patient preference and clinical suitability.
- 02Identification of residual hymenal tissue — anatomy varies significantly between patients.
- 03Careful excision of irregular edges where appropriate, preserving as much native tissue as possible.
- 04Reapproximation with fine dissolvable sutures placed in a way that supports gentle healing.
- 05A short period in the recovery area, then discharge home the same day.
- 06Written aftercare instructions and the schedule for the included follow-up reviews.
05What hymenoplasty is not
Important —
clarifications.
Some myths about hymenoplasty circulate online. The clarifications below matter, particularly for patients arriving with information from sources that did not have their interests at heart.
- 01It is not a guarantee of any particular post-operative anatomy. Tissue heals differently in every patient.
- 02It is not a virginity test — no medical procedure can certify virginity, and the World Health Organization has explicitly stated that virginity testing has no clinical or scientific validity.
- 03It is not performed without informed consent. The decision belongs to the patient, alone, at every step.
- 04It is not advertised, photographed for marketing, or discussed with anyone you have not authorised to know about it.
The World Health Organization, OHCHR and UN Women joint statement on virginity testing is worth reading in full. It is unequivocal — no clinical or scientific basis for the practice exists. Hymenoplasty is a reconstructive surgical procedure with its own clinical indications, separate from any such test.
06Privacy safeguards in our practice
How we protect —
your privacy.
We have explicit safeguards in place because we know hymenoplasty is privacy-sensitive. These are not requested — they are standard for every patient considering this procedure at RevAesthetic.
- 01All correspondence is sent to whichever address and phone number you nominate — including options that are not your usual residence.
- 02Billing is via 'RevAesthetic' on your statement; no detail of the procedure appears on any statement issued to you.
- 03If you are using a family-shared email, you can nominate a single-use or different email for all communication from us.
- 04Consultations can be arranged at the time of day that best suits your privacy needs, including outside normal business hours where possible.
- 05Cate, our practice manager, is the single named contact for your file — you will not be transferred between staff members.
All Australian medical practices operate under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, overseen by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. Our additional safeguards above sit on top of those legal requirements.
07The regulatory framework
The same protections —
as any cosmetic procedure.
Hymen repair operates under the cosmetic surgery framework introduced by the Medical Board of Australia in July 2023. The non-negotiable steps are the same as for any cosmetic procedure.
- 01A referral from your usual GP, independent of the operating practice.
- 02At least two consultations, with at least one face-to-face.
- 03A psychological screening using a validated tool, looking for body dysmorphic disorder or other underlying concerns.
- 04A seven-day cooling-off period between the second consultation and the operation.
08Cost, Medicare, and private health
Where rebates —
do not apply.
Dr Nara is a cosmetic doctor — private health insurance and Medicare rebates do not apply to elective hymenoplasty. A formal written quote is provided after your individual consultation by Cate, our practice manager. The quote is itemised — doctor's fee, anaesthetist, theatre, consumables, and the included follow-up window — so you can see exactly what is covered.
We do not offer in-house payment plans, and we do not receive a referral fee from any finance provider. For consumer credit information, the ASIC MoneySmart personal loans guide is a useful starting point.
09Where consultations happen
Three states —
one operating location.
Dr Nara consults at Chadstone in Melbourne (Victoria), Cooee in Tasmania, and Stepney in South Australia. Surgery itself takes place at our accredited Melbourne theatre. The interstate option is particularly relevant for patients who would prefer to consult well away from where they live, for privacy reasons. We will accommodate that.
More on each location is on the Melbourne, Tasmania and Adelaide pages.
10Risks & considerations
Risks discussed —
openly at consultation.
The recognised risks of hymenoplasty include bleeding, infection, scarring, wound dehiscence, asymmetry, and the possibility of a result that does not persist as the patient hoped. These vary from patient to patient and depend on your soft tissues, your overall health, and your compliance with after-care during the six-week rest period.
The full list of cosmetic surgery risks is on our risks of surgery page, and we recommend reading it before the second consultation. A second opinion from a qualified health professional is encouraged for any cosmetic procedure.
11Frequently asked questions
Questions patients —
actually ask.
Is this a procedure I can keep private?
Yes. We treat hymenoplasty as one of the most privacy-sensitive procedures in our practice and have explicit safeguards in place — billing descriptors, correspondence preferences, single-point contact through Cate, the practice manager. The procedure itself is performed at our accredited Melbourne theatre; nothing in your medical record or in any communication to you will name the procedure unless you ask it to.
Is it painful?
The procedure itself is performed under anaesthesia — local with sedation or general, depending on what is decided at consultation. The recovery is generally well tolerated with simple analgesia. Most patients describe the discomfort as mild to moderate for the first 48-72 hours, easing daily after that. Recovery depends on your soft tissues and compliance with after-care.
How long does recovery take?
The immediate physical recovery is generally one to two weeks. The rest period before sexual activity, tampons, or strenuous exercise is six weeks. The internal tissue takes the full six weeks to bond properly; resuming activity earlier is the most common cause of complications. We will go through the timeline in detail at the second consultation.
Does Medicare cover this?
Dr Nara is a cosmetic doctor — hymenoplasty performed for elective reasons is not eligible for a Medicare rebate, and private health insurance generally does not contribute. There are specific Medicare item numbers for clinically necessary reconstructive procedures that are assessed independently by your GP. This is not the pathway we offer at RevAesthetic.
What if I want to talk to a woman about this first?
Our patient liaison, Jenny, is a female team member who is available to discuss the consultation pathway by phone or email before you decide whether to proceed. Many patients prefer this first conversation. There is no charge for the initial liaison conversation, and you are under no obligation to go further.
Will this be a permanent result?
Hymenoplasty is reconstructive surgery. The tissue is sutured in a way that supports healing, but tissue heals differently in every patient and the result is not guaranteed to persist indefinitely. We will explain this carefully at consultation. Results vary from patient to patient as each case is unique with its intrinsic risks and expectations.
Is it safe to travel overseas for this procedure?
There are practical and clinical reasons we recommend against it — including the absence of in-country follow-up if a complication arises, the inability of an Australian doctor to access overseas operative notes, and the regulatory differences in accreditation standards between jurisdictions. The AHPRA register lets you verify the credentials of any operating doctor in Australia before you make this decision.
12How to begin
Next steps —
if you are researching.
The first step is a referral from your usual GP, followed by an in-person consultation with Dr Nara. If you would prefer to speak with our patient liaison Jenny first, by phone or email, that conversation is available without obligation. We respect that this is a deeply personal decision and there is no same-day pressure.
You can begin a confidential enquiry at any time. RevAesthetic is located at Chadstone Shopping Centre, G 120A / 1341 Dandenong Rd, Chadstone VIC 3148, with alternate consultation locations in Cooee (Tasmania) and Stepney (South Australia).
