Liposuction in Tasmania.
Dr Kishen Nara consults on liposuction at the Cooee rooms on Tasmania's north-west coast — the primary Tasmania consult location, where most Tasmanian liposuction consultations are held. For patients in the south, alternate consult dates are scheduled at Hobart approximately every two months.
The conversation
Selection, suitability, realistic expectations
A liposuction consultation with Dr Nara in Tasmania is generally an hour. The Cooee rooms are the primary Tasmania consult location, and most Tasmanian patients are seen there. The structure is the same as at our other clinics: a private examination room, a chaperone present, the conversation paced by you. Dr Nara will examine the areas you are considering, assess skin quality and tone (which affects how well the tissue will retract after fat removal), check BMI and general health, and discuss whether liposuction is the appropriate procedure for what you are noticing.
Liposuction is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss procedure. The discussion at consultation will be honest about what it can and cannot achieve. Where skin elasticity is limited, Dr Nara may discuss a combined approach or recommend a different procedure altogether. The option of doing nothing is also a real option.
Because Dr Nara visits Tasmania on selected dates rather than weekly, the two-consultation process is generally arranged around the visit cadence. A Zoom consultation can be the first appointment if you would prefer to begin remotely. A formal written cooling-off period applies in line with Medical Board of Australia guidelines.
Travelling to Cooee — or to Hobart
A practical note for Tasmanian patients
Cooee sits on the Bass Highway, a short drive from Burnie. Patients travel to Cooee for liposuction from across the north-west coast — Burnie, Devonport, Ulverstone, Penguin, Wynyard, Somerset, Latrobe, Sheffield, Smithton — and across to Launceston, Deloraine and the northern midlands. On-site parking is available, and the rooms are quiet around the time of the appointment.
For patients closer to the south — Hobart, Sandy Bay, South Hobart, Glenorchy, Lutana, New Town, Battery Point, Bellerive, Tranmere, Kingston, Blackmans Bay, Howrah, Lindisfarne, Moonah and the wider Hobart suburbs — the alternate Hobart consult location runs approximately every two months at 71 Bathurst Street in the centre of the city.
Procedures themselves are performed at accredited Australian hospital or day-surgery facilities. Depending on the procedure and your circumstances, this may be in Tasmania or on the mainland. Many patients combine a Tasmania consultation with a procedure in Melbourne; Dr Nara will discuss what suits your timing at consultation.
The procedure, in brief
Tumescent technique, body-contouring focus
Liposuction involves the careful removal of subcutaneous fat through small access incisions, using a cannula and a tumescent solution that reduces bleeding and bruising. Common areas include the abdomen and waist, the inner and outer thighs, the chest (in male gynaecomastia patients — see the gynaecomastia page), the upper back, the bra-line, and the submental area (neck). The procedure can be performed under tumescent local anaesthesia with sedation, or under general anaesthesia, depending on the volume to be removed and the areas treated.
A full clinical overview, including the risks specific to liposuction — contour irregularities, asymmetry, prolonged swelling, fluid collections, sensation change — is on the liposuction pillar page. Related reading on the three liposuction procedures most commonly performed at our rooms is in this article.
Cosmetic surgery carries risks. These are discussed openly at consultation, in the context of your circumstances. The risks of surgery page gives a fuller factual overview.
