01Article · Tummy tuck cost

What affects —
the price quoted.

A tummy tuck quote in Melbourne depends on more variables than most other cosmetic procedures — the type of abdominoplasty, the extent of muscle separation, whether liposuction is combined, and the hospital-stay requirements. This article walks through the variables that genuinely move the figure and the line items a complete quote should include.

02In short

The final figure is the sum of six itemised line items, moved by six clinical variables. The biggest movers are the type of abdominoplasty (mini, full, or extended), the extent of muscle separation, and whether liposuction of the flanks is combined. A headline price that does not specify these things is a marketing starting position, not a quote.

03Who this article is for

Mostly post-pregnancy —
and post-weight-loss patients.

The patients who arrive at consultation for abdominoplasty are usually researching after one of two life events — completing their family, or stabilising after substantial weight loss. Either way, the assessment is the same: skin laxity, muscle separation, residual fat distribution, scar position, overall health, and weight stability are all reviewed at the first consultation.

For the broader clinical overview, see the tummy tuck pillar page and the recovery-focused companion piece tummy tuck recovery — week by week through three months.

04The clinical variables

What actually —
moves the cost.

Six variables, decided at consultation, account for most of the variation in a final written quote.

  • 01Type of abdominoplasty — mini-abdominoplasty for limited lower-abdomen excess; full abdominoplasty with muscle repair; extended or fleur-de-lis for substantial weight loss patients.
  • 02Extent of muscle separation (rectus diastasis) — the time-in-theatre cost varies with how much suture-repair work the abdominal wall needs.
  • 03Skin laxity and the amount of excision required — directly affects operating time and consumables.
  • 04Whether liposuction of the flanks is combined — adds theatre time, anaesthetic time, and a separate set of consumables.
  • 05Anaesthesia — abdominoplasty is generally performed under general anaesthesia; length of the anaesthetic is the variable.
  • 06Hospital stay — most cases involve at least one overnight stay; larger or combined cases may require two.

05The line items in a complete quote

Six things —
worth seeing in writing.

A complete written quote for abdominoplasty in Australia generally itemises six things. If any of them are missing or only mentioned verbally, ask for them in writing before committing.

  • 01Doctor's fee — operating time, planning, and the standard follow-up review window through three months.
  • 02Anaesthetist's fee — billed by the anaesthetist's practice; varies with anaesthetic length.
  • 03Theatre and facility fee — hospital fee covering nursing, sterile equipment, recovery, and overnight stay.
  • 04Assistant fee — when an appropriately qualified medical practitioner assists in theatre; generally itemised.
  • 05Consumables — sutures, drain kits, dressings, compression garment, take-home analgesia.
  • 06Follow-up reviews — typically reviews at one week, three weeks (drain check if applicable), six weeks, and three months.

06Medicare and post-weight-loss patients

A narrow pathway —
assessed by your GP.

Dr Nara is a cosmetic doctor — elective cosmetic abdominoplasty is not eligible for a Medicare rebate, and private health insurance generally does not contribute. The Medicare Benefits Schedule does include a narrow item-number pathway for abdominoplasty after substantial weight loss that meets defined clinical criteria (typically substantial weight loss, stable for a meaningful period, with significant functional skin issues). This is assessed independently by your GP, not by us.

The published item descriptors and current criteria are searchable via the MBS Online portal. The decision about whether a case meets the criteria belongs to your GP, who can refer onward to a specialist plastic surgical pathway separate from our cosmetic practice if appropriate. We do not provide this assessment ourselves.

07The non-negotiable steps

Four steps —
regardless of price.

Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure under the framework introduced by the Medical Board of Australia in July 2023. These steps apply regardless of where the quote sits.

  • 01A referral from your usual GP, independent of the operating practice.
  • 02At least two consultations, with at least one face-to-face.
  • 03A psychological screening using a validated tool to look for body dysmorphic disorder or other underlying concerns.
  • 04A seven-day cooling-off period between the second consultation and the operation.

The full guideline document is published by the Medical Board of Australia and is freely available. The AHPRA register lets you verify the credentials of any operating doctor in Australia.

08The combined-procedure conversation

When liposuction —
belongs in the plan.

The most common combined plan we see is abdominoplasty with flank liposuction — addressing the residual fat across the side of the trunk that an abdominoplasty alone does not reach. This is a clinical assessment, not a default add-on. Some patients benefit from the combined plan; others do not need it; a small group are better served by liposuction alone, without the muscle repair.

The combined quote will be higher than the abdominoplasty quote alone, because it adds theatre time and consumables. It is generally lower than the sum of two separate procedures performed at separate times, because one anaesthetic and one recovery period covers both. The liposuction cost article and the lipo 360 article are worth reading alongside this one if a combined plan is being considered.

09Where consultations happen

Three states —
one operating location.

Dr Nara consults at Chadstone in Melbourne (Victoria), Cooee in Tasmania, and Stepney in South Australia. Abdominoplasty itself takes place at our accredited Melbourne hospital, regardless of where you have consulted. The quote is the same across all three locations because the surgical inputs do not change.

For interstate patients, accommodation planning around the discharge window is part of the consultation conversation — abdominoplasty patients are generally advised to stay locally for at least the first week before flying home. More on each location is on the Melbourne, Tasmania and Adelaide pages.

10Risks & considerations

Cost does not —
buy out risk.

The recognised risks of abdominoplasty include bleeding, infection, wound healing problems (particularly around the central scar), seroma, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (which are why mobilisation from day one matters), contour irregularity, altered sensation across the lower abdomen (generally improves over months), asymmetry, and the possibility of needing revision surgery for residual concerns. The procedure is among the larger cosmetic operations and the consent conversation reflects that.

Most patients will not experience most of these complications. The full list of cosmetic surgery risks is on our risks of surgery page, and we recommend reading it before the second consultation. Results vary from patient to patient as each case is unique with its intrinsic risks and expectations.

11Frequently asked questions

Questions patients —
actually ask.

Why is the published price range for tummy tuck in Melbourne so wide?

Because abdominoplasty itself is not one procedure. A mini-abdominoplasty for limited lower-abdomen excess is a substantially smaller operation than a full abdominoplasty with muscle repair, and both are smaller than an extended or fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty for post-weight-loss patients. A single number out of context is rarely useful. A formal written quote is only provided after your individual consultation by Cate, the practice manager.

Does Medicare or private health insurance cover abdominoplasty?

Dr Nara is a cosmetic doctor — Medicare rebates and private health insurance do not apply to elective cosmetic abdominoplasty. The Medicare Benefits Schedule does include specific items for abdominoplasty after substantial weight loss that meet defined clinical criteria, assessed independently by your GP. The published item descriptors are searchable on the MBS Online portal.

Should I have liposuction at the same time?

Sometimes — most commonly liposuction of the flanks alongside an abdominoplasty for post-pregnancy patients with residual flank fat. The decision is clinical, made at consultation based on your assessment, not a default upsell. A combined procedure is more expensive than abdominoplasty alone because it adds theatre time and consumables, but it is generally less expensive than the two procedures performed separately.

When should I have the procedure if I am planning more children?

Generally after you have completed your family. Pregnancy after abdominoplasty is possible and is not inherently risky, but it can stretch the muscle repair and reverse some of the result, leading to revision conversations later. We discuss this carefully at consultation and the honest answer is sometimes 'this is not the right time for you yet'.

When should I have the procedure if I am still losing weight?

Generally not until your weight has been stable for at least six to twelve months. Significant weight loss after abdominoplasty changes the result; significant weight gain stretches the repair. Patients who are still in an active weight-loss phase are usually advised to wait and to revisit the conversation once their weight is stable.

What is the realistic budget I should plan for?

Abdominoplasty pricing in Australia varies considerably and depends on the variables above. Patients should expect a written, itemised quote at the end of the second consultation. We do not publish a headline price because the honest answer depends on your individual assessment.
