Blepharoplasty in Tasmania.
Dr Kishen Nara consults on blepharoplasty (eyelid lift surgery) at the Cooee rooms on Tasmania's north-west coast — the primary Tasmania consult location, where most Tasmanian eyelid surgery consultations are held. For patients in the south, alternate consult dates are scheduled at Hobart approximately every two months.
The conversation
Functional, aesthetic, or both
A blepharoplasty consultation with Dr Nara in Tasmania is generally an hour. The Cooee rooms are the primary Tasmania consult location, and most Tasmanian patients are seen there. The structure is the same as at our other clinics: a private examination room, a chaperone present, the conversation paced by you. Dr Nara will examine the upper-lid skin, the lower-lid soft tissues, the brow position and the tear-trough, and assess whether what you are noticing is primarily upper-lid heaviness, lower-lid bags, or a combination.
For many patients, the question is functional as well as aesthetic — upper-lid heaviness can interfere with driving and reading, particularly in the peripheral field. Dr Nara will discuss this honestly. He will also discuss the option of doing nothing as a real option, and the order of operations if a brow lift or a non-surgical alternative might suit you better.
Because Dr Nara visits Tasmania on selected dates rather than weekly, the two-consultation process is generally arranged around the visit cadence. A Zoom consultation can be the first appointment if you would prefer to begin remotely. A formal written cooling-off period applies in line with Medical Board of Australia guidelines.
Travelling to Cooee — or to Hobart
A practical note for Tasmanian patients
Cooee sits on the Bass Highway, a short drive from Burnie. Patients travel to Cooee for eyelid surgery from across the north-west coast — Burnie, Devonport, Ulverstone, Penguin, Wynyard, Somerset, Latrobe, Sheffield, Smithton — and across to Launceston, Deloraine and the northern midlands. On-site parking is available; the rooms are quiet around the time of the appointment.
For patients closer to the south — Hobart, Sandy Bay, South Hobart, Glenorchy, Lutana, New Town, Battery Point, Bellerive, Tranmere, Kingston, Blackmans Bay, Howrah, Lindisfarne, Moonah and the wider Hobart suburbs — the alternate Hobart consult location runs approximately every two months at 71 Bathurst Street in the centre of the city.
Procedures themselves are performed at accredited Australian hospital or day-surgery facilities. Depending on the procedure and your circumstances, this may be in Tasmania or on the mainland. Many patients combine a Tasmania consultation with a procedure in Melbourne; Dr Nara will discuss what suits your timing at consultation.
The procedure, in brief
Upper lids, lower lids, or both
Upper-lid blepharoplasty involves the careful removal of excess skin (dermatochalasis) and, where indicated, a conservative amount of underlying tissue, through an incision concealed in the natural upper-lid crease. Lower-lid blepharoplasty addresses bags and / or skin laxity — the technique varies (transconjunctival, skin-pinch, or a combined approach) depending on what is contributing. Both can sometimes be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation; for combined cases, general anaesthesia at an accredited Australian hospital facility is generally appropriate.
A full clinical overview, including the risks specific to eyelid surgery — bruising, swelling, dry eye, asymmetry, scar issues, and rare but serious complications — is on the blepharoplasty pillar page. Related reading on whether eyelid surgery affects driving is in this article.
Cosmetic surgery carries risks. These are discussed openly at consultation, in the context of your circumstances. The risks of surgery page gives a fuller factual overview.
